Courses and training
Dispensing courses
Attending an approved dispensing course is a requirement for small animal and equine practices working towards Veterinary Hospital accreditation.
Doing one of these courses fulfils requirements 10.3.1 (small animal) and 9.3.1 (equine) under the Medicines module of the PSS.
BSAVA Dispensing course
This course helps practices manage their dispensaries. It’s day-long course that covers topics such as:
- Medicines regulations
- Storage and disposal of medicines
- Controlled drugs
- Dispensing mishaps
- What to expect from an inspection

Managing Veterinary Medicines: Staying Legal and Promoting Safety
This free online course - produced by RCVS Knowledge and the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) - helps practice teams improve medication safety. Course users will learn how to put systems in place that will reduce errors, improve patient outcomes and improve practice systems. This course fulfils PSS requirements as a dispensing course.
This course will help practices working towards PSS accreditation to meet the requirements of the Medicines module.
Vetpol Veterinary Pharmacy Manager course
This course aims to provide the knowledge needed to effectively run a veterinary pharmacy on behalf of a veterinary practice. The training covers topics such as:
- Veterinary medicines
- Sourcing veterinary medicines
- Stock control and storage
- Dispensing veterinary medicines
- Safe handling of veterinary medicines
- Monitoring use of veterinary medicines
- Communication
Medicines courses
Courses to help you prepare for the PSS Medicines Module.
VetTeamAMR Education
These RCVS Knowledge courses provide peer-reviewed learning and resources from experts across the professions for the whole veterinary team on responsible antimicrobial stewardship. The VetTeamAMR Education includes:
• Companion animal and equine learning platform and Antibiotic Guardians (RCVS Knowledge has called for at least one Gold Level antibiotic guardian in every practice)
• Farm Vet Champions learning platform, including the SMART Goals tool
Team members are invited to work through the modules at their own pace and pick and choose those that are appropriate for their work setting and the animals seen in practice. The courses provide free access to over 48 hours of CPD on need-to-know, species specific information covering antibiotics, anti-parasiticides and anthelmintics.
