Working abroad
Are you a RCVS-registered veterinary surgeon planning to work abroad? Find advice on registration requirements, working in the EU after Brexit, and how to request letters of good standing to support your move.
If you’re RCVS-registered and planning to work abroad, it’s important to check the requirements in the country you’re moving to. We can help support your registration by providing the documents you need.
Working in the EU
Since Brexit, UK veterinary qualifications are no longer automatically recognised in EU member states under EU Directive 2005/36/EC. You'll need to apply directly to the relevant authority in your chosen country.
Each EU country has its own application process and requirements. The Federation of veterinarians of Europe (FVE) has helpful information on working in different European countries..
EU vets looking to work in the UK
If you're an EU-qualified veterinary surgeon planning to work in the UK, you'll need to apply for full registration with the RCVS. EU qualifications are no longer automatically recognised.
Read our registration information to understand the application process and requirements.
Letters of good standing
Most countries will ask for a letter of good standing before you can register to practise. This document confirms your registration with us and that your professional record is in good order.
As the UK's veterinary regulator, we can provide letters that confirm:
- Your current registration status with the RCVS
- Whether you've been subject to any disciplinary enquiries or findings
- Your professional standing and fitness to practise
We send letters electronically to the relevant authority and email you a copy, so your documents arrive quickly and securely.
How to request a letter of good standing
- Contact the competent authority in your destination country to confirm their specific requirements.
- Request your letter through MyAccount or contact our Registration Team.
- Pay the required fee when submitting your request.
- We'll process your letter and send it directly to the authority.
Processing times
- Standard service: seven working days
- Urgent service: two working days
If you'll no longer be practising in the UK
Contact us if you're moving abroad permanently and won't be practising veterinary medicine in the UK.
We may need to update your registration category. This helps us maintain accurate records and makes sure you're in the appropriate category for your circumstances.
