How to apply for Fellowship
RCVS Fellowship recognises veterinary surgeons who make exceptional contributions to advancing the profession. On this page you'll find information about the three routes to Fellowship and how to submit your application.
The RCVS Fellowship programme recognises veterinary surgeons who make exceptional contributions to advancing the profession. This prestigious status can be awarded through three distinct routes, each designed to acknowledge different types of professional excellence.
RCVS Fellowship criteria
Whichever route you take to Fellowship, there are shared requirements and assessment standards to meet
You must hold member (MRCVS) status to apply. You must demonstrate excellence in one or more of these areas:
- Ground-breaking discovery, application of knowledge or development of the veterinary profession
- Sustained contribution to scholarship
- A body of published creative work, for example in political documents, publications, teaching materials or educational documents
- Indisputable advancement of your subject
- Leadership in the veterinary profession
- Advancement of public understanding of the profession
We assess all applications against previous successful applicants to maintain consistent standards.
Choose your Fellowship route
We offer three Fellowship routes. You can apply through whichever route best fits your achievements.
- Meritorious Contributions to Clinical Practice (MCCP) - Recognising advanced or expert-level clinical practice and innovative approaches to veterinary work.
- Meritorious Contributions to Knowledge (MCK) - Recognising significant contributions to veterinary knowledge and professional practice.
- Meritorious Contributions to the Profession (MCP) - Recognising exceptional contributions to advancing the veterinary profession.

Once we’ve received your application, the Fellowship Secretary will contact you to proceed with payment. We will assess your application once this has been received.
Route reassignment
We may move your application to a more suitable route if your achievements better align with different criteria. However, we will contact you first to ask for your consent.
Application guidance for each Fellowship route
This guidance details how to fill in each part of the Fellowship application form, according to your chosen route.
Verifying your publications
An ORCID ID helps us verify your publications. You can register at orcid.org if you don't already have one.
Assessment process and timelines
A Credentials Panel of at least four members reviews each application. The Fellowship Board makes final decisions based on panel recommendations. Any conflicts of interest in our assessment panels are managed according to established protocols.
We aim to complete assessments within six months. Panel Chairs provide feedback to unsuccessful applicants.
We reserve the right to modify application processes and requirements. We'll notify applicants of any significant changes that might affect their applications.
Reapplications
There is no limit to how many times you can reapply. We encourage you to use feedback to strengthen future applications.
Unsuccessful applicants cannot appeal our decision, only the process we followed.
Annual obligations
Successful Fellows pay annual fees and are expected to contribute to our professional community.
