Veterinary Graduate Development Programme (VetGDP): For vet students
When you finish your veterinary degree, you'll be able to access mentoring and support through our Veterinary Graduate Development Programme (VetGDP). Tailored to your role and workplace, the programme will help to guide your journey from student to professional.
Graduate support with VetGDP
The Vet GDP provides support during the crucial first few months as a qualified veterinary surgeon. Completing the programme is mandatory for all new graduates, but most find it valuable as they start out in their new career.
The programme is designed around Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) - skills and responsibilities that you'll take on as you grow in confidence and competence. You’ll select the most relevant EPAs for your role, whether you're working in a mixed practice or focusing on small animals.
You'll complete the VetGDP within 12 to 18 months, earning 52.5 hours of continuing professional development (CPD) credit along the way. Find out more about the Vet GDP when you graduate. (Link to Vet GDP: Info for graduates).
Your VetGDP adviser
Your adviser will act as your professional mentor, guiding you, answering your questions, and helping you to build confidence in your new role.
All advisers must be qualified vets registered in the UK for at least three years and have completed specific VetGDP training. The training is refreshed every five years to ensure you’re getting the best support possible.
How does it work?
The VetGDP follows a structured but flexible approach, adapting to your specific circumstances and career path.
Monthly progress reviews
Meeting with your adviser at least once a month, you’ll discuss your progress, set goals and address any concerns. Rather than formal assessments, these supportive conversations are designed to help you reflect on your development.
Your e-portfolio
You'll build an e-portfolio that documents your journey through the programme. This includes:
- Evidence of the EPAs you've completed
- Reflections on your experiences
- Records of your meetings with your adviser
- Any additional learning or training you've undertaken
You'll access your e-portfolio through your 1CPD account. Look for the gold VetGDP button on your dashboard.
Flexibility for you
While most graduates complete the programme in 12 to 18 months, your specific role, workplace and personal circumstances will influence how long it takes you to demonstrate the required competencies.
Your adviser
Speak to your VetGDP adviser as your primary source of support. They're available to answer questions, provide guidance and help you navigate any challenges you encounter.
