EMS health and safety

During extramural studies (EMS), you, alongside your veterinary school and your placement provider, share responsibility for keeping everyone safe. Here’s a quick look at the responsibilities of each party.

Health and safety responsibilities

Your placement provider has a legal obligation to clearly communicate their health and safety policies to you. As a student, you're expected to follow these policies throughout your placement.

Always speak up if you're unsure about any safety procedures or have concerns during your placement.

Insurance

You might find understanding insurance overwhelming when you're starting your veterinary education, but we're here to help. The good news is that the British Veterinary Association (BVA) student membership provides free personal accident and personal liability insurance, giving you essential protection during your studies and placements.

Professional liability insurance

Under the RCVS Code of Professional Conduct, all veterinary surgeons must have professional indemnity insurance. This can come from either an individual policy or employer's insurance.

As a student on an EMS placement, your professional liability coverage should come through your placement provider's insurance, giving you protection while learning and working under their supervision.

Always check with your placement provider and your veterinary school if you have any questions about your insurance coverage or need clarification about what's included.
