Veterinary Graduate Development Programme (VetGDP)
The Veterinary Graduate Development Programme (VetGDP) provides tailored support for recent graduates, overseas-qualified veterinary surgeons, and those returning to the UK Register. This structured 12 to 18 month programme helps vets develop confidence and adjust to their new roles.
Who the VetGDP is for
The VetGDP programme is for:
- Recent graduates who qualified in or after summer 2021 and are starting their first role as a vet.
- Overseas-qualified vets joining the UK Register with less than 18 months' experience
- Returning vets who have been away from the UK Register for five years or more and want to work as a vet again
We recognise that starting your first job or returning to practice can be challenging. The VetGDP is designed to support you through this transition, boosting your confidence and skills.
How it works
To take part in VetGDP, you need to work in a VetGDP-accredited workplace. Your employer must:
- Provide you with a designated VetGDP Adviser who has completed RCVS Academy training
- Give you protected time to take part in programme activities
- Support regular meetings and reflective discussions with your adviser
Your VetGDP Adviser must be a vet with at least three years on the UK Register. They'll guide you through the programme and help you develop the skills needed for confident, competent practice.
Programme structure
The programme is built around Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) – specific workplace tasks that demonstrate your developing competence. You'll work with your adviser to:
- Select relevant EPAs based on your role and development needs
- Plan how to achieve each EPA through structured activities
- Document your progress and reflections in the VetGDP e-portfolio
- Have regular meetings to discuss your development
This approach ensures your learning is practical, relevant, and directly applicable to your daily work. View the EPAs.
The programme aligns with the RCVS Code of Professional Conduct, helping you develop the competencies needed for safe, effective veterinary practice.
How long it takes
Most participants complete the programme within 12 to 18 months. However, we understand that everyone's circumstances are different, so the timeline can be flexible. You and your adviser can adjust the pace to fit your circumstances and learning needs.
Throughout the programme, you'll have ongoing support from your adviser and access to resources that help you integrate smoothly into practice.
