Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs)
The VetGDP programme is made up of Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs), designed to reflect the responsibilities that veterinary surgeons encounter in practice. They focus on broad work areas applicable across species and settings, incorporating key professional skills like communication and decision-making.
EPAs are high-level professional activities that integrate knowledge, skills and attitudes. Each VetGDP participant will select the EPAs appropriate to them with their Adviser. The EPAs are designed to be broad enough to be applicable across species, contexts and workplaces.
How EPAs work
EPAs help bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world practice. Here's what you need to know:
- You’ll use your e-portfolio to document evidence that demonstrates you can perform your chosen EPAs competently with minimal support.
- You'll need evidence of both the activities themselves and your reflections on what you’ve learned.
- A peer reviewer will check your portfolio and make sure that you've covered the full scope of your role, including routine and infrequent tasks.
- If you're missing important EPAs, you may need to submit additional evidence.
- Each EPA integrates clinical skills with professional abilities such as communication, decision-making and organisation.
Choosing EPAs
You and your VetGDP Adviser should select EPAs together. You do not have to do a set number, but you should choose ones that cover every aspect of your role. You'll need to show competency across your chosen EPAs, so pick ones that reflect both your day-to-day work and any less frequent, but important tasks, you could encounter. You and your adviser should regularly review your EPA descriptions and success criteria as you build your portfolio. This helps ensure you're gathering the right evidence and meeting expectations. If a peer reviewer believes an important EPA is missing, you may be asked to add it and submit additional evidence.
