EPA 4: Recognising and managing emergency situations

This EPA focuses on identifying urgent situations, implementing life-saving interventions, and coordinating effective team responses. You'll develop the skills to assess, triage, and manage veterinary emergencies safely and confidently.

Description

Emergency situations demand a unique combination of skills. You'll need clinical knowledge to triage the situation accurately based on the severity and facilities available. They also require the ability to function as part of a team, recognise your limitations, and seek help when necessary.

Initial evaluation of the individual should include level of consciousness and adequacy of ventilation and circulation. You'll need to be able to respond calmly and effectively across a range of emergency cases and clinical environments relevant to your role.

Success criteria

To succeed, you must show you can recognise emergency situations promptly and respond quickly and appropriately. This includes understanding how to triage patients based on severity and the resources available to you.

Equally important is recognising your professional limitations. You'll need to demonstrate when and how to transfer care to a more experienced or specialist colleague, ensuring patient safety is always your priority.
