EPA 5: Using evidence and research in practice

This EPA guides you through evidence-based decision making, fostering the lifelong learning skills crucial for advancing veterinary medicine and improving outcomes for animals and clients.

Description

You must demonstrate evidence-based practise across all clinical contexts. This means developing strong clinical reasoning skills – the foundation of quality veterinary work.

You need to:

  • Identify when you need additional information to make informed decisions
  • Ask the right clinical questions to address knowledge gaps
  • Find and evaluate relevant information sources
  • Assess how evidence applies to your specific clinical situations

This isn't just about technical skills. Evidence-based practice requires self-awareness, reflection and a commitment to continual improvement. You must recognise your limitations and actively work to address them through continuous professional development.

Success criteria

You'll succeed when you consistently demonstrate evidence-based decision making in your clinical work. This means showing that you can critically evaluate information quality and determine how it applies to real patient situations.

Most importantly, you must commit to lifelong learning as an ongoing process that directly benefits your patients and clients.
